Description
Small archive of materials belonging to U.S. sociology professor Dr. Ronald Vander Kooi. The two pieces of ephemera were tucked inside of the book."Report from the Beria Reserve: The Protest Writings of Valentyn Moroz," who was a Ukrainian politician and Soviet political prisoner, sentenced for "anti-Soviet" sentiments and activities in the 1960s and 1970s. 1974 softcover in good condition with damp stain to edge.
Vintage copy of response from the Canadian Office of the Prime Minister response August 19, 1974, to Dr. Vander Kooi's correspondence requesting that political prisoners be released, even if exiled, and that "these governments be made fully aware of the widespread knowledge and indignation that exists regarding their treament ... of these prisoners." The response letter discusses the [Pierre] Trudeau government's position about the treatment of Ukrainians in the Soviet Union and concern about the situation of Jews and dissenters. . The response letter specifically discusses Moroz.

I purchased this book and its enclosed ephemera from the estate of Dr. Ronald Vander Kooi (1938-2021), who was a sociology professor at universities in Michigan and the Chicago area, as well as a board chairman of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and a specialist in housing and homelessness for the Salvation Army (

). He had an extensive library that included works on the Civil Rights Movement and other 60s/70s issues. It was his habit to store related ephemera and articles inside of his books.
