The World Health Organization recommends laying the baby down on its back to reduce the risk of sudden death syndrome. Positioned on its back, the infant's face is free to breathe without constraint.
However, this position puts pressure on the back of the skull, which leads to deformational or positional plagiocephaly and is often accompanied by torticollis. Up to 1 year old, the skull of a newborn is still soft and can be misshaped.
