    Description

By Fire and Sword - Boyar Sons Cavalry
Summary: Set of unpainted miniatures for By Fire and Sword.
By Fire and Sword is a 15mm scale historical wargame developed by Wargamer. This realistic, playable and dynamic wargame recreates the 17th century wars in Europe, focusing on the periods between 1640 and 1676; a time of almost constant warfare waged by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on all fronts, in many cases with several enemies at the same time.
Moscow was a growing power in the seventeenth century and after loosing the war of 1632-1634 it was craving revenge. The reign of Alexei Mikhailovich (1645-1676) was a time of great change for Moscow and they began to modernize the army. Following the complete destruction of the Muscovite army at Konotop (1659), it became clear that further reforms were needed. In order to deal with ever increasing European enemies, more Western European style units were formed, foreign officers were hired to train and lead the troops, the strength of the army was increased, and the level of engineering and artillery was improved.
Boyar Sons cavalry is a medium cavalry formation made up of Russian nobility called “opolcheniye” (a kind of yeomanry). It included poor nobility which arrive to serve in person. In return for their service they were awarded with land endowments or pay. The bravest and best of the boyars were formed into reconnaissance sotnias (hundred). Their equipment varied depending on the wealth of the nobleman and instructions concerning armament were quite general. They arrived with sabers, maces, short spears, bows or long firearms. Similarly armors were not uniform.
