    Motherland is a monument erected in St. Petersburg at the Piskarevsky Memorial Cemetery. Memorial to Leningraders who died during the blockade
    in the WWII
    . In 1956, on an area of more than 26 hectares, construction began on a memorial complex designed by architects A.V. Vasiliev and E.A. Levinson. The memorial was opened on May 9, 1960, on the fifteenth anniversary of the victory in the WWII, and was originally called "a monument to the heroes of the siege of Leningrad"
