Soviet Naval Flag of the Supreme Commander (Commander in Chief) of the Soviet Navy, in wool bunting, dated 1985.
This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL FLAG made in the Soviet Union with the sole purpose to use on a Soviet naval vessel – this flag is not a civilian issue, souvenir or replica!
Made in bunting, the tough coarse wool material traditionally used in Russia and Soviet Union for maritime flags. VERY LARGE SIZE: measures 80" x 49" (about 6 2/3 x 4 feet.)  This uncommon flag is similar to a regular Soviet naval ensign but instead of the star and hammer & sickle emblem it has the national emblem of the USSR. When raised on the mainmast of a naval ship, it designated that the Supreme Commander was onboard. The canvas hoist sleeve has stamped GOST-81 manufacturing standard code, name of the manufacturer (Galantereynaya Factory) and a 1985 date of manufacture.
The flag is in VERY GOOD condition. It is perfectly sound, free of tears or excessive wear, and its colors are strong. It is overall very clean with the exception of a few very small spots and smudges, and a single faint stain to the beige field – none of it very noticeable or detractive, especially considering the huge overall size of the flag. What’s really remarkable about this flag is that it is COMPLETELY FREE OF MOTH DAMAGE. Even at very close inspection, we couldn’t find even the tiniest moth bites, nips or tracks. This is very uncommon for Soviet flags made of wool! Just as a precaution to make sure the flag stays this way and there is not even a potential moth problem, we’ve treated it in our freezer for over two weeks – which is our standard procedure for incoming wool items.
This very uncommon Soviet flag was made just a few years before the collapse of the USSR and the subsequent decline of its once mighty fleet. This impressive piece is big enough to attract attention from far away and is certain to make a great backdrop for your Soviet collection. Great Cold War collectible and conversation piece!
