Soviet wall-plaque with sculptured profile of Stalin.
GUARANTEED ORIGINAL piece made at the Soviet Mint during late 1940s through mid-1950s – NOT a recent replica!
Made in Brass and White Porcelain, this is a very high-quality piece. Measures 125 mm (approx. 5 inches) in diameter. This limited-edition piece was produced at the Soviet state mint and is so marked on the reverse in Russian (it reads “Monetnyi Dvor” or literally “Mint” and has the 50000-circulation number). On the reverse near the top, there is a provision for hanging it on the wall.
The original image for this plaque was created by the acclaimed Soviet artist Nikolay Sokolov, winner of as many as five Stalin Prize awards. His name is shown on the undercut of the shoulder. Famous for his renditions of Lenin and Stalin, he was actually best known for his graphics, especially propaganda cartoon drawings he made during WW2 as a member of famous Kukryniksy team.
The plaque is in GREAT CONDITION, outstanding for an item this old! The image of Stalin and details of the ornamental border are exceptionally well preserved. There is very attractive even patina to the brass, but original “gilt” mint luster is still clearly visible in recessed areas on the Stalin’s bust and in the florals of the ornamental border, and to even larger degree on the reverse of the plaque. There is very minor amount of verdigris at the edge in 3 to 4 o’clock segment, but it is not detractive and actually adds a lot of character. The white porcelain background is essentially perfect, free of any chips or hairline cracks. There may be a couple of tiny contact marks here and there, but the white surface has no scuffing or rubbing, still shows nice luster. The whole piece appears simply glorious!
One must remember that most images of Stalin were destroyed during the late 1950s “de-Stalinization” campaign by Khrushchev, and not many of original Stalin’s busts and plaques have survived to our days. Most of what you usually see on the market are poor quality replicas, not genuine items.
This easy to display Original Stalin Plaque can be a nice backdrop decoration for your Soviet collection and a great conversation piece!
