    Description

Soviet USSR table medals Khatyn  Punitive operation of the Nazis 1970s  Original
Khatyn (possibly from Belorussian hata - house) is a village in Belarus that was destroyed on March 22, 1943, by a punitive detachment as revenge for the murder of several German soldiers[1]. In accordance with the principle of collective punishment, 149 residents of Khatyn were burned alive or shot by the German army and an auxiliary police battalion[2] for possible assistance from the villagers to the partisans[3]. The 118th Schutzmannschaft Battalion and the SS Dirlewanger Special Battalion took part in the punitive operation[4].
In 1969, a memorial complex was opened at the site where the village was located. Khatyn became a symbol of the mass extermination of civilians carried out by the Nazis and collaborators in the occupied territory of the USSR.
